The Japanese artist Tadashi Kawamata comes to Lisbon to share the vast experience in site-specific installations, in collaboration with the collective of artists Os Espacialistas. The notion of Arte Útil, or Useful Art, has been proposed by the Cuban artista Tania Bruguera and na informal group of collaborators to describe collaborative artistic practices that contribute to social change, creating beneficial outcomes to the people or communities involved in them. The Portuguese curator Miguel Amado delivers this workshop in collaboration with Bruguera and Alistair Hudson, the co-directors of the Arte Útil Association.

"Sexy MF" by Ana Borralho & João Galante is already a classic of the performance art in Portugal. The workshop questions the body and its intimacy, sexuality and eroticism, identity, gender behavior and its limits. How to transcend the notions of feminine and masculine, not only in the intellectual understanding but in the physical experience of the day to day? How to create sexual confusion by nullifying or stressing gender?

Belgian choreographer Jan Martens comes to Lisbon to conduct a dance workshop for dance and theater performers. The workshop offers a total immersion into the diverse choreographic landscape of Jan Martens' creations, which introduces participants to the methodologies they have used for some of their work.

After his trip to Lisbon during the BoCA 2017 Biennial, with "Nowhere", in collaboration with Ricardo Jacinto, Italian pianist Marino Formenti, considered the "Glenn Gould of the 21st century" (Los Angeles Times), is leading a workshop on his concept of "Systemic Music Performance" for musicians and composers.

The film director João Salaviza confronts his last three films ("Russa", "High Cities of Bones", "The Dead and the Others"), where he rehearses new ways of thinking, producing, and living Cinema. Participants are also invited to bring out sketches, ideas and maps for future films.

Claudia Castellucci, co-founder with Romeo Castellucci and Chiara and Paolo Guidi of the Italian theater company Societas Raffaello Sanzio, in 1981, comes to Portugal to develop a workshop that combines dance and gesture theory. The workshop "The Wave Treatment" is built according to a rhythmic principle that considers the different moments of the day. A dance based on the sound of the bells and implemented with a stick.

For the first time in Portugal, CLAUDIA CASTELLUCCI developed a workshop that now results in three public presentations of dance performance. "The treatment of him where" can be seen in the cloister of the Convento das Bernardas / Museu da Marioneta.
During the workshop, a dance was created created with the sound of bells and performed with a stick. This is an unprecedented opportunity to discover CLAUDIA CASTELLUCCI's work in Portugal.

This workshop will explore the multidisciplinary methods used by the Egyptian artist Basim Magdy to experiment with poetic narratives, with unconventional photographic processes, with the construction of analog images and with the overlapping of colors using filters and masks inside and outside the camera.

This is the first time French choreographer Mathilde Monnier directs a workshop in Portugal. She will go through different writing processes related to her repertoire, which are also an opportunity to think about the notion of reinterpretation. This workshop will also be a space to question the need to go through contemporary repertoires to better understand what is represented in time and how writing can cross (or not) an era.

How can we use the preparation for the ring as a preparation to make dance or art? What if the preparation of the fighter is an artistic process? We want to explore the exchangability of physical disciplines as a tool for dancers, makers and creative people. Choreographer and performer Florentina Holzinger, who was at BoCA 2017 for an artistic residency, proposes now a workshop to recruit warriors, assuming that this will result in better artistry.

Dance, Video, Ecosystem

It is the first time that Argentine choreographer and dancer conducts a workshop in Portugal. In this workshop, Cecilia Bengolea proposes to dance and film inside (Casa da Dança de Almada) and outside the studio (Cais do Ginjal, in front of the Tagus river).

The Spanish artist Dora García comes to Lisbon for the first time to conduct a performance workshop at MAAT Museum. How to react to a reality system that is not part of it? The feeling of strangeness is increasing, the distance is increasing, and it is increasingly difficult to find anchor points in a system that repeats the same mistakes over and over.

Choreographers and artists Gerard & Kelly return to Lisbon to direct a workshop. How do we fall into and out of sync with each other? How is time the technical support of both performance art and social relations? How might an awareness of time lead us to history and to politics? What is queer, feminist, and post-colonial about time?

Theatre

Imagine a conference that nobody goes to. A performance in which the main invited scientists do not appear physically, but are represented by local artists. "Absentee Conference" is a project for which the company Rimini Protokoll is researching. In Lisbon, it will be a workshop on global cooperation in a global crisis for students and professionals in the performing arts, writing and related fields.

Conference | free entrance

Stefan Kaegi is in Lisbon for the BoCA Summer School. In this conference, he will show and comment short videos on recent productions of the german theatre label Rimini Protokoll including 50 remote controlled spectators, 100 statistically chosen citizens of São Paulo as well as international weapon dealers and immersive spaces remembering the legacies of people after the end of their lives.

Cinema

The filmmakers João Pedro Rodrigues & João Rui Guerra da Mata lead the workshop "Fiction 2 meters away", where they discuss what might be the cinema with restrictions / limitations / conditionalities / setbacks / obstacles / antagonisms / obstacles, that is , the daily constraints of cinematographic creation. Participants are invited to bring their film drafts or audiovisual projects.

KHALIK ALLAH

Jamaican-Iranian filmmaker and photographer Khalik Allah, based in New York, runs a workshop for the first time in Lisbon, in which he discusses the spiritual implications of his work, namely the use of photography to capture the essence of a person from a non-judgmental perspective; the recognition of all people as a light, and as a child of God; the choice to find beauty everywhere and in everything around us; and the use of photography to build intimate relationships.

VON CALHAU!

In the workshop "Tesourelha", the artists Marta Ângela and João Alves propose to form a listening group with the participants. During the two intensive days of the workshop, four listening sessions will take place, lasting 2h30 each. Each of the sessions will correspond to listening accompanied by a composition of sounds. No image. Each of the compositions will have as reference each of the four elements: Fire, Water, Earth, Air.

ALICE RIPOLL

Brazilian choreographer Alice Ripoll proposes a theoretical-practical workshop: a first part, where she presents her way of directing and choreographing, sharing experiences and methodologies; and a second part, in which the dancers and creatives of Cia REC present practical exercises developed in creative and improvisation processes. A unique opportunity to get together with one of the most significant artists of contemporary dance.

LASTESIS

The Chilean feminist and multidisciplinary collective LASTESIS arrives in Portugal for the first time to lead a performance and activism workshop, which will result in a public presentation. In the convergence between performance, design, fashion, history, music and, of course, political and social activism LASTESIS will conduct a 3 day creative laboratory with the participation of around 80 women and dissenters.

DUNCAN EVENNOU e PATRICK LAFFONT-DELOJO

Based on the stage experiments that Frédérique Aït-Touati and Bruno Latour have been conducting together for the past ten years, the workshop proposes to explore these questions through different mediums (video, scenography, philosophy, architecture, cartography, drawing), and to share with the participants the different tools that the troupe has been exploring for several years in the form of scenic and graphic research - a gaïa-graphy.

Jonathan Uliel Saldanha

On the border between sound and visual arts, composer and director Jonathan Uliel Saldanha investigates areas of intersection between these artistic territories, exploring tensions between the synthetic and the landscape. He runs a two-day music and sound arts workshop at CCB.

Pilar Albarracín

A multidisciplinary artist, Pilar Albarracín is one of the most recognised contemporary Spanish artists. Her work questions, through parody or irony, artistic, religious and cultural traditions, especially that of the identity of women in Andalusian culture. She runs a 2-day performing arts and visual arts workshop at MAAT.

MARIANA TENGNER BARROS, GUSTAVO CIRÍACO, PEDRO RAMOS

"Inside the forest, body and imagination" is the first artistic action to take place in the Monsanto Forest, where BoCA started a tree planting process. With a tripartite format, this performing arts workshop brings together three artists with a transdisciplinary practice, between dance, performance and the visual arts: Mariana Tengner Barros, Gustavo Ciríaco and Pedro Ramos.

EL CONDE DE TORREFIEL

Tanya Beyeler and Pablo Gisbert are the directors of the Spanish theatre collective El Conde de Torrefiel, a company that has been touring the most important European festivals and theatres in recent years. They lead a 5-day theatre and performing arts workshop at Teatro Nacional D. Maria II.

ORLAN

She shocked the world in the 1990s when he performed “The Reincarnation of Santa ORLAN”, a series of nine plastic surgeries that were broadcast via satellite to several museums and art galleries in Europe. ORLAN is one of the most important French artists, author of the manifesto “Carnal Art”. She runs a three-day workshop for the first time in Portugal.

At the invitation of BoCA, the French artist ORLAN presents, at 7 pm in the Sala dos Geradores, in the Central Tejo building, the public conversation “THIS IS MY BODY, THIS IS MY SOFTWARE”, with free entry. The talk takes place in connection with her first workshop in Portugal, which she runs at BoCA Summer School, between September 30th and October 2nd.

GAYA DE MEDEIROS

In this dance and performance workshop, we will explore the possibilities of modulating presence – playing with body and vocal performance in the encounter with the other. Through improvisation and composition exercises, participants will focus on the tension between body, voice and identity.

Neste workshop de teatro, Ntando Cele irá partilhar e experimentar metodologias multidisciplinares para criações que ultrapassam as fronteiras entre teatro físico, vídeo-instalação, concerto e performance.

TAMARA CUBAS

The Uruguayan choreographer, visual artist and cultural manager Tamara Cubas invites us to experiment and analyse in action certain practices and logics that she considers useful in the search for an autonomous body.

PEDRO ALVES SOUSA

In this sound and music workshop, multidisciplinary artist Pedro Alves Sousa proposes different techniques of chance and repetition to explore the architectural and spatio-temporal dimensions of music.

HUNI KUIN COLLECTIVE

In the "Body and Nature" workshop, the Huni Kuin collective proposes a practice and reflection on the role of art in the process of strengthening bodies in their society. During the training, each body will take on different faces: sometimes an instrument, sometimes a collective craft, sometimes a support for artistic, symbolic and communicative intervention with nature through the discovery of painting.

HUNI KUIN COLLECTIVE

In this workshop, the Huni Kuin collective proposes an immersive experience that relates to the musical culture of its people, thinking of voice and melody as vehicles and instruments for acting in the world, constituting bodies and living well.

SOFIA DIAS & VÍTOR RORIZ

In this workshop, Sofia and Vítor present a series of research and improvisation tools that work on the relationship between gesture and movement with the word and the voice – the word, assumed as malleable matter that exists beyond its meaning; and the voice, as the excess that "overflows" the bodies.
