Portugal’s recent history has witnessed two migratory experiences: those who left the country during the dictatorship and those who arrived in the era of the European Union. Fresh from a rapidly changing Portuguese society, “Mal de Ulisses” is Rui Catalão’s new dramaturgical creation with Faro’s migrant community, which puts into dialogue testimonies of one country disappearing and another emerging.

A traumatic epic of those who left their countries of origin in search of another future, in “Mal de Ulisses” old emigrants and young immigrants tell their stories: why they left their families, their ways of life and the problems they faced adapting.

Rui Catalão will be in Faro interviewing the migrant community, interviews that will give way to a performance-reading that reveals the conditions and challenges of a community that is redefining the national demographic landscape. The play will then be presented as a final show at Teatro das Figuras.
